Mercedes-Benz presents a visionary super sports car: Exquisite virtual reality - Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo

For the new PlayStation 3 racing game Gran Turismo 6, the Mercedes-Benz designers have developed the visionary concept of a super sports car the Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo. Extreme proportions, sensual contours and intelligently implemented high tech blend to form a body that visually brings to life the breathtaking performance of 430 kW (585 hp) and 800 Nm of torque. As a 1:1-scale model, the Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo is celebrating its world premiere on 19 November 2013 at the opening of the new Mercedes?Benz Research & Development Center in Sunnyvale, California. The super sports car with its hallmark Mercedes gullwing doors will be taking to the virtual racetrack when the new racing game goes on sale in December 2013 as the first of the "Vision Gran Turismo" series of vehicles.

To mark the 15th birthday of the popular Gran Turismo series this year, Kazunori Yamauchi, Producer of Gran Turismo series and President of Polyphony Digital Inc., called upon the world's leading automotive manufacturers and design studios to look forward into the future. Using the theme "Vision Gran Turismo", these creative teams were to develop concept models which give a unique insight into the further development of the automobile. As virtual vehicles that nonetheless function just like a real car, the visionary concepts will be gradually unveiled in and integrated into the new game Gran Turismo 6 through online updates.

Extreme proportions and variable LED radiator grille

"By virtue of its proportions and expressive appearance, the Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo embodies the brand's defining design philosophy of sensual purity in a unique way. The design of this concept car reflects to extreme effect the perfect symbiosis between emotional, sensuous contours and intelligently presented high tech," says Gorden Wagener, Vice President Design Daimler AG.

The sports car proportions that are a typical Mercedes feature have been reinterpreted: the long bonnet has a flowing transition into a compact greenhouse offset to the rear, which takes the form of an aerodynamically efficient water drop to descend slightly at the rear, where it rests on the rear end with broad shoulder contours. The dynamic aura is accentuated by an extended, dramatic side contour and a pronounced bulge to the wheel arches, which blend into the low-slung, muscular bodyshell. The angled headlamps, with their colour scheme and determined look, convey a sense of sportiness and readiness to leap forward. This impression is reinforced by the bonnet with its expressive forms and motorsport details, such as the release catches on the bonnet and the fuel cap, for example. The red-glowing contour lines on the lower part of the vehicle create an effect similar to that of exterior ambient lighting and stand out from the silver-painted bodywork. This makes the Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo look even more aggressive.

Another eye-catching feature is the radiator grille a reinterpretation of the wide Mercedes-Benz sports car grille with central star. Its shape is reminiscent of the legendary 300 SL racing car of 1952. However, instead of classic louvres the grille of the show car features exclusively LEDs. The variable LED grille with different light patterns is a further development of the diamond grille introduced with the new A-Class.

Purist interior dedicated to speed

The exterior design, which is systematically and passionately geared to motor racing, is congenially mirrored in the interior of the two-seater. Inspired by the Formula 1 cockpit, the red integral sports seats blend into the black flooring of the footwell to form a protective shell. The form of this flowing, sculptured shell suggests enormous forward thrust. The dashboard also creates an equally dynamic effect. It has been designed in the form of two gullwing doors which are positioned on each side of the steering column. As a result the actual doors themselves appear to be an extension of the instrument panel.

The central display is optimally positioned in the driver's field of vision: it takes the form of a glass surface floating directly above the racing steering wheel with its shift paddles, and shows all the relevant information such as road speed, engine speed and operating temperature as required. Operation is by rocker switches in the centre of the dashboard and in an overhead console, like in a jet. The steering column visibly penetrates the firewall to the engine compartment, creating a visual connection between the driver and the heart of this super sports car, the AMG V8 front-mid engine.

Intelligent lightweight construction and authentic racing car sound

The AMG V8 biturbo engine delivers an exceptionally agile response to even the smallest movements of the accelerator. It develops 430 kW (585 hp) and a maximum torque of 800 Nm. With an aluminium spaceframe body and components in carbon fibre, the material of choice in motor racing, the Mercedes?Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo tips the scales at only 1385 kilograms. That amounts to around 2.4 kilograms per hp an unrivalled figure in the super sports car segment, and one that guarantees exceptionally dynamic performance. Excellent deceleration values and fade resistance at the highest level are ensured by the AMG ceramic high-performance composite braking system. The AMG sports exhaust system with eight tailpipes integrated into the rear end provides a powerful accompaniment whenever the car accelerates, and ensures an unrivalled motorsports sound experience. For fans of Gran Turismo 6, the Mercedes-AMG sound specialists have created a powerful, sonorous exhaust note that authentically celebrates the V8's love of high engine speeds.

New Mercedes-Benz Compacts Continue Course of Success: Mercedes-Benz Kecskemt Plant Runs at Full Steam

Production of the new generation of Mercedes-Benz compact cars with the A-Class, B-Class and CLA model series is running at full steam in the production network of the two plants in Rastatt, Germany, and Kecskemt, Hungary. The Hungarian plant, opened in March 2012, plays an important role in this: Together with the Rastatt plant, it produces the B-Class. In addition, it is the sole production location of the compact four-door coupe CLA.

Andreas Renschler, Member of the Daimler Board of Management responsible for Manufacturing and Procurement Mercedes-Benz Cars & Mercedes-Benz Vans, stroke a first balance after about 18 months of production on the occasion of a visit to the plant: "Here in Kecskemt, we broke new ground with the construction of the first European Mercedes-Benz plant outside of Germany. It is obvious that you have mastered the construction of a new plant in a new country with a new team very well. Our investment of 800 million euros for a new compact car plant here in Hungary has founded another success story for Daimler and the Mercedes-Benz brand in every respect."

Underscoring the plant's importance for the further market success of the new compacts, Renschler said: "Especially with the CLA, for which this site has global production responsibility, the Kecskemt plant is making a decisive contribution to our growth with new customers and in new markets along the Mercedes-Benz 2020 growth strategy. Every single vehicle from this plant proves what we mean when we talk about Mercedes-Benz quality."

Renschler continued on the outlook for the employees: "Many of you are still rather young members of our global Mercedes-Benz production team. I am even more impressed to see you work in all areas of the plant with the highest commitment to learn and a great level of dedication. That's why the Kecskemt plant today is already on a par with other Mercedes-Benz plants, and is globally recognized as a natural part of our global production network. Thank you keep up the great work!"

Frank Klein, Head of the Mercedes-Benz Kecskemt plant: "We will not rest on past achievements, but will continue to forge ahead for future success as well. That's why we are fully concentrated on our core task: to get the B-Class and the CLA on the road in top quality."

A success story: The new generation of Mercedes-Benz compact cars

Mercedes-Benz' attack in the premium compact segment continues: The Frankfurt Motor Show in September saw the presentation of the GLA compact SUV, which will roll to customers beginning in spring 2014. The GLA is the fourth of five new models that mark a significant expansion of the brand's product portfolio and appeal to new customer groups. As an example, the conquest rate of the new A-Class in Europe is at about 50 percent, the average age of the customers is 10 years lower compared to the predecessor model. Already introduced were the new B-Class, the new A-Class and the four-door compact coupe CLA. The new compacts have been a sales revelation over the past nine months: Worldwide, 267,467 customers bought an A-Class, B-Class or CLA-Class model (+68.3%). Further momentum is expected with continuously rising availability in further markets.

About the Mercedes-Benz Kecskemt plant and the production locations of the new compacts

The Kecskemt plant and the Rastatt plant together form the production network for the new generation of Mercedes-Benz compact cars. That network significantly contributes to the overall economies of compact car production and allows the flexible and optimum management of both plants' capacity utilization. The Kecskemt plant was opened in March 2012, less than four years after the initial decision for the location, and has since produced the B-Class, which is also built in Rastatt. State-of-the-art, environmentally sound technology is used at the plant. In January 2013, the new four-door compact coup CLA was added as a second model, which the plant produces for all customers worldwide. With more than 3,000 staff in the meantime, the plant is the most attractive employer in the region, not least to due to the high attention given to the qualification of its employees. The pioneering efforts of the plant and its Hungarian partners to establish dual vocational and university education based on the German model further contribute to this. Daimler AG and the Hungarian Government in 2012 also signed a joint partnership agreement to establish and reinforce the region of Kecskemt as a center of the Hungarian automobile industry on a long-term basis.

Cheap, Easy Ways to Keep Your Interior Looking New

Guest Article by Don Elfrink *

When most people think about cleaning and maintaining their automobile, they think of washing and waxing the exterior. Thats certainly important a lack of maintenance can lead to paint oxidation and other problems that detract from the beauty and the value of your ride. However, maintaining the interior is just as important. If youre struggling in this area, here are some cheap, easy ways to keep your interior looking brand new for as long as you own your vehicle.

Vacuuming Is Essential

It might seem like a no-brainer, but one of the most important and effective ways to maintain the interior of your car is to vacuum it regularly. Dirt and debris can quickly build up in your floorboards, turning your cars carpet into a disaster. Consider investing in a portable vacuum for quick cleanups, and make sure to vacuum your car thoroughly every time its washed. Most car washes have commercial strength vacuums that perform quite well.

Replace Your Floor Mats

Most cars come with floor mats from the manufacturer. These mats serve many roles, including minimizing wear and tear to the carpet under them. However, over time, your floor mats are going to wear out. Most OEM mats arent particularly durable, and its a very good idea to consider investing in an upgraded set. Youll find several options out there, including carpeted mats and thick rubber or plastic ones that offer much longer lifespans. Make sure that you get a set thats designed to fit your vehicle.

Sunshades Help

Sunshades help keep the interior of your car cool. However, they also serve another important function. They prevent the damaging rays of the sun from scorching and ruining your dashboard. Over time, the UV rays from the sun will dry out the material of your dash, leading to cracking and discoloration. Use sunshades any time your car will be exposed to direct sunlight, and you can make sure that your dash lasts much longer.

Dust Regularly

Dust gathers quickly in most automobiles. Over time, dust will settle into every tiny crack and crevice, turning your pristine interior into an eyesore. Regular dusting will help to minimize this, and keep your cars interior looking great for years to come. While there are specialized products on the market for this, you can do a lot with just some auto cleaner and a few Q-Tips. Make sure that the cleaner you choose is actually manufactured for automotive interiors (dont use Pledge, for instance), and dust on a regular basis.

Dont Eat or Drink in the Car

This is both one of the simplest, yet most difficult things to do. Sometimes, eating and drinking in the car is unavoidable, but make sure you limit this as much as possible. Food and drink can lead to foul odors, stains and sticky messes, and it can be almost impossible to prevent those problems from happening. This is particularly true with children, but even the most astute daily driver knows firsthand how easy it can be for mustard, ketchup, soda and other elements to make their way onto the interior.

If possible, dont eat or drink in the car at all. If you find that its unavoidable, keep it to a minimum. Clean up any spills as soon as possible, and make sure you do a thorough job. In the case of things like mustard that stain fabric, keep a can of upholstery cleaner handy for spot cleaning.

These simple tips will help ensure that you keep the interior of your car clean to avoid problems that might cost you an arm and a leg.

Protecting Your Car in the Dog Days of Summer

Guest Article by Reggie Sizemore *

There are many things that go hand-in-hand with those long, hot days of summer. Sunscreen, cool drinks, plenty of vacation time, the list goes on and on. When it comes to those gruelingly hot mid-summer days, there is really only one thing that matters the most and that is keeping cool.

Not only is it important to keep ones person cool, but maintaining your car during the extreme heat can prevent a tremendous amount of hassle down the road. The last thing anybody wants is to be broken down in 100+ degree weather with no A/C. After months of battling the elements of winter your car is most likely in need of some service, that is why I have compiled a checklist for preparing/maintaining your car for the grudgingly hot days of summer.

1. Remove winter tires
a. This should be a given once spring arrives
b. If you do not have seasonal tires, it is still important to have your all-season tires either rotated or changed.

2. Brake check
a. Winter can take quite a toll on your vehicles brakes.
b. Warning signs include: grinding, squealing, screeching.

3. Coolant
a. Consider running 5 miles without any water in 100 degree weather That is how your car feels without adequate coolant.
b. Be sure to check/maintain coolant levels at the beginning of summer, as well as before leaving on any extended drives.

4. Wipers
a. Like the brakes, wiper blades take a beating during the winter months.
b. Be sure to change blades out when spring comes around to ensure clear vision on those beautiful summer days.

5. Air Condition
a. Most likely youre A/C has been out of use for the past 6 or 7 months.
b. Get your air conditioning serviced before first use to ensure it is prepared to work hard throughout the summer months.
c. A malfunctioning A/C can cause the car the heat up and ultimately lead to further problems.

6. Tires
a. Hot surfaces like asphalt can increase the possibility of flats.
b. The hot air causes expansion and can lead to excessive tire pressure.
c. Check tire tread and pressure thoroughly and frequently.
d. Always have a spare (make sure its not flat as well)

7. Battery
a. The cold of winter results in a higher likelihood of corrosion of auto parts, including the battery.
b. Before getting your summer started, be sure to get your car batter cleaned and tested.
c. Have an expert check all batter cables and points.

8. Oil
a. Like all times of the year, it is important to frequently check and top off your cars oil.
b. During the hot months it is vital that your vehicle is a well-oiled machine to ensure a smooth ride all summer long.
c. Fully synthetic oils are specifically designed to protect your engine in hot weather.

9. Lights
a. Longer drives are more prevalent during the summer, that is why it is important to be prepared for traveling at night.
b. Replace any headlights/brake lights that are not working.
c. Clean all lenses to ensure optimized vision while driving at night.

10. Clean!
a. The most important of all preparations is of course making sure your car looks good, right?
b. Clean out the underbody to rinse away any salt build-up to avoid erosion.
c. Wash the exterior regularly to keep your vehicle looking fresh.
d. Wax regularly to protect your cars shine.
e. Apply a protectant to interior surfaces to avoid sun-damage and cracking.

After carefully going through this checklist, your car is sure to beat the heat year after year and bring you countless memories without fail. Dont let the hot weather bring you down because your car cant handle the heat. Instead be on top of your preparation and maintaining to ensure a smooth ride all summer long.
