Geneva Motor Show 2015: Near-series show car Mercedes-Benz G 500 4x4

Only a G-Class can be better than a G-Class. This is the credo followed by the developers with the Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG 6x6, and they are now stepping up a gear with the G 500 4x4. The basic recipe for this overcomer of everything is simple: take the superior all-wheel-drive powertrain including portal axles from the 6x6 take away one axle - and blend it all with a newly-developed variable chassis and the series-production G-Class body. A large pinch of V8 power with 310 kW (422 hp), a set of 22-inch 325/55 R 22-sized wheels, carbon-fibre detachable body parts and then just gourmet ingredients from the seductive designo Exclusive range for the interior and the 5-star menu for all off-road enthusiasts is ready.

A new addition to the extreme G-Class model family: the G 63 AMG 6x6 has a model brother in the form of the G 500 4x4. The near-series show car is a new highlight in the superlative-rich history of the G-Class and blends all the advantages of the model series. The series-production models of the G-Class supply the unshakeable foundations in the form of the body and ladder-type frame, which compensate for the considerably increased performance of the G 500 4x4 without any problem and also without any type of reinforcements. The G 63 AMG 6x6 donates an amended version of the ruggedly determined permanent all-wheel-drive powertrain with portal axles. The engine compartment houses a completely new V8 engine with a displacement of four litres, direct injection and biturbocharging. Also new is the chassis with dual spring/damper struts and adjustable damping. Finally, in the interior, the G 500 4x4 occupants enjoy comfort and an ambience on a par with a luxury saloon.

New engine offers V8 biturbo power

The 4.0 litre V8 biturbo engine in the G 500 4x4 stands out for its sublime power delivery, the targeted lightweight construction, as well as its high efficiency. The newly developed eight-cylinder features twin turbochargers which are not mounted on the outside of the cylinder banks but rather inside the V configuration what is known as the 'hot inside V'. The advantages lie in the compact engine design, the optimum response and the low exhaust gas emissions. The piezo direct petrol injection used exclusively at Mercedes-Benz is responsible for the mixture formation. The spray-guided combustion process has been enhanced in the third generation to meet all future statutory requirements. In series production, the highly efficient and economical 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine would meet the Euro 6 emission standard, including the maximum particulate emissions level that will not take effect until 2016.

The V8 crankcase consists of an aluminium alloy and ensures maximum strength with the lowest possible weight. The cylinder walls in NANOSLIDE technology are twice as hard as conventional cast-iron cylinder liners, minimise the inner friction and thus the fuel required and facilitate maximum mileages. NANOSLIDE was developed by Daimler starting in the year 2000 and has so far been used successfully and reliably in over 200,000 engines since 2006.

Twin sidepipes on both sides in front of the rear wheels modulate the G-typical sound of the G 500 4x4 and master the entire repertoire of potent sports cars from soft mumbling in neutral through sonorous humming in the partial-load range to emphatic booming when accelerating under full load. A welcome side effect of the sidepipes: there is improved off-road capability, because in the rear area there are none of the usual rear silencers, which could otherwise restrict the angle of departure.

Things are really looking up both on and off-road

In view of the key data for the chassis and powertrain it seems more than logical that the off-road world starts for the G 500 4x4 where other vehicles capitulate. But it is surprising that the new "G" puts in an absolutely convincing performance on the asphalt. Due to the considerably wider track of the portal axles compared with the series-production car (+299 mm), the large 22-inch 325/55 R 22-sized wheels and the adjustable damping with its Sport mode, the enhanced G-Class drives through bends so dynamically that the occupants feel as though they are in a sports car rather than a cross-country vehicle. This also applies to tours on unsurfaced slopes or snow-bound roads, in which case the performance of a high-powered rally car kicks in.

For anyone preferring to use the G 500 4x4 off the beaten track, the optional off-road size 37 x 12.5 x 18-inch MT tyres are recommended. Permanent all-wheel drive, an off-road reduction in the transfer case, portal axles and three differentials lockable whilst on the move will not be found on conventional cross-country vehicles. This results in merciless driving dynamics in all conditions. Even the highest sand dunes are stormed by the show car with ease, whilst rocky terrain is scaled like a chamois, and water is driven through without any problems.

The portal axles developed for versatile applications supplement the off-road portfolio of Mercedes-Benz and are the technical highlight of the G 500 4x4 show car. As opposed to conventional rigid axles, here the wheels are not at the height of the centre of the axle, instead they are situated much further below on the axle heads due to the portal transmission. Therefore, on the G 500 4x4 the ground clearance rises to 450 millimetres and the fording depth or rather the diving depth to 1000 millimetres. Here are the off-road data in comparison with the series-production Mercedes-Benz G 500:

At the highest level: the portal axles tricks

But the portal axle design has yet more decisive advantages which render complex adjustments superfluous: through the unchanged position of the rigid axles in relation to the chassis, the anchorage points of the suspension, the steering connection and the position of the cardan shafts all remain identical. In addition, the reduction in the portal transmissions balances the huge rolling circumferences in both the off-road and the on-road tyres. The gear ratios, speedometer drive and ABS sensor system also remain unchanged. This reduction in the hub drives also has the effect that the drive torque is first set at the wheel and thus the mechanical loads in the entire powertrain, in particular for the drive shafts, are reduced.

Mobile declaration of independence the chassis

The chassis is fundamentally based on the series-production G model and offers a perfect symbiosis of sporty dynamism and relaxed comfort, both on the road and off it. The new damper adjustment, derived from rally sport, has a decisive effect here. Two spring/damper struts running in parallel are used per wheel. One spring/damper strut works conventionally with set damper characteristics. The second spring strut has electronically controlled adjustable damping, which thus varies the entire damping behaviour depending on the current driving situation. With this set-up, considerable kingpin inclination is possible between the settings SPORT and COMFORT, which the driver can select using a button in the centre console. The switching times between the two modes are record-breakingly low, at 15 milliseconds.

During dynamic cornering the sporty setting performs sterling work, because the significantly tauter connection of the chassis allows higher cornering speeds. If the driver is more in the mood for pleasurable cruising, the COMFORT setting effortlessly dampens all the unevenness in the ground. In extreme situations such as abrupt evasive manoeuvres, the system automatically switches over to the firm setting for the sake of maximum possible handling safety. The comfortable setting also helps during off-road sessions, because the wheels retain better surface contact. Even on heavily contoured off-road terrain, every surface traction possibility can be utilised effectively.

Company with unlimited liability: beadlock wheels with MT tyres

Optimised tyres are available for the G 500 4x4, especially for punishing off-road trips: mud/terrain tyres (M/T) in size 37 x 12.5 x 18 inches on special beadlock wheels. Normally the usual wheel/tyre combinations refuse a traction-promoting lowering of the air pressure for journeys on sand, for example, to 0.5 bar. Here 1.0 bar is the lowest limit, because beneath this low pressure the tyres can come off during steering manoeuvres or ingression of sand can infiltrate the sealing surface between the tyre and wheel rim and thus leads to a slow puncture. Not so with the G 500 4x4. Here special two-piece 18-inch beadlock wheels are used. With this type of design, during assembly the tyre is pinched in so tightly between the two wheel halves and an inner beadlock ring that it cannot slip off the rim and no sand can enter, even in the case of total loss of air.

Should the chassis ever still come into harsh ground contact in spite of an anticipatory driving style and the excellent ground clearance, the developers have displayed far-sightedness here, too, and integrated a robust, two-piece underguard in stainless steel. These means that the most important assemblies in the front and rear area are well protected against impact and more severe shocks.

Sporty luxury squared

In visual terms the G 500 4x4 raises no doubts as to its passion. The voluminous tyres, the huge distance to the ground, the height of nearly 2.25 metres with a width of virtually 2.10 metres and the clear, straight design command respect right from the first glance. Further highlights: the trim with the integral LED light strips above the windscreen and the elaborate partially painted wheel-arch flarings - both in fine carbon fibre - plus the front bumper on the G 63 AMG and G 65 AMG models.

The interior appointments make a sportily luxurious impression. The G 500 4x4 offers an exclusive ambience with the designo Exclusive package. The seat bolsters and head restraints as well as the dashboard, centre console and armrests in the doors are styled in black designo leather with white contrasting topstitching. The seat surfaces and door panels are covered in DINAMICA and impress with their attractive diamond-design quilting. In addition to this there is DINAMICA trim for the roof liner and the body pillars.

The hub of the "G" world is in Graz

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class development department located in Graz is the centre of competence where all things "G" are concerned and is responsible for the development and series support of the legendary cross-country vehicle. Furthermore, Graz in Austria has been the production location for all civilian and commercial G-Class vehicles since 1979. Whether and when the decision on series production of the Mercedes-Benz G 500 4x4 will be made depends on the reaction which the near-series show car receives.

Geneva Motor Show 2015: European debut for the all new Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class Coup (C 292)

Mercedes-Benz is combining two classes of vehicle each with its own distinct style to make a new model, the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coup. The sporty nature of a coup dominates, imbued with the striking characteristics of a robust SUV. In addition to convincing on-road vehicle dynamics, the GLE Coup looks impressive as well. With its flowing side contour, elongated and low greenhouse, striking radiator grille with central chrome louvre and rear end design, the GLE Coup cites styling features typical of particularly sporty Mercedes-Benz models. At the premiere the GLE Coup will be available as a diesel or petrol model with an output range of between 190 kW (258 hp) and 270 kW (367 hp). The top-of-the-range model GLE 450 AMG, the first representative of a new Mercedes-AMG product line the AMG sports models is particularly attractive. In addition to the generous amount of standard equipment, the DYNAMIC SELECT dynamic handling control system, the Sports Direct-Steer system and the driver assistance systems typical of the brand, the GLE Coup always comes with the 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission and 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive. The GLE Coup is now available to order. Prices start at 66,699.50 (Price for Germany incl. 19% VAT).

"Our GLE Coup combines typical coup attributes, such as sportiness, dynamism and agility, with the confident presence, versatility and robustness of an SUV", says Prof. Dr Thomas Weber, Board Member responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development, in characterising the latest member of the Mercedes-Benz model family. The GLE Coup is the new addition to the successful portfolio of Mercedes-Benz coups. Alongside the classic, two-door C, E and S?Class models and the four-door CLS and CLA coups, the new coup displays a highly individual interpretation of the physiognomy and light-footed approach typical of this family of vehicles.

"For Mercedes-Benz, the GLE Coup is the trailblazer for a versatile vehicle class. It will enable us to win new customers for our brand", says Ola Kllenius, Member of the Divisional Board of Mercedes-Benz Cars responsible for Marketing & Sales, commenting on the new model joining the product portfolio.

DYNAMIC SELECT dynamic handling control system: highly variable from racy and sporty to poised and comfortable

The GLE Coup feels like a true sports coup right from the word go. Despite the similarity to an SUV with its raised seating position and an all-round view that is expansive for a coup, the occupants are led to believe that they are in sports rather than off-road mode. The sound is reminiscent of powerful sports cars and, combined with the spontaneous and direct response to all commands, is guaranteed to get your pulse racing. On the other hand, it can also create a superior feeling of calm, coupled with unshakeably serene driving dynamics. These two different worlds can normally only be experienced in two separate vehicles an agile, thoroughbred sports coup and an easy-going, comfortable SUV. But the new GLE Coup is different: DYNAMIC SELECT enables a wide spread in the driving dynamics and combines these diametrical worlds of experience in a single vehicle an automobile premiere.

GLE 450 AMG the first AMG sports model

The balancing act between extremely sporty yet still comfortable has been mastered especially well in the GLE 450 AMG. As the first AMG sports model, the V6 top-of-the-range GLE Coup enables an attractive entry to the world of the sports car and performance brand.

"The GLE 450 AMG Coup is our first sports model, and further highly emotional and performance-oriented models will follow in the near future. The new product line from Mercedes-AMG has allowed us to make true sports car technology and the fascination of motorsports more accessible", says Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. "Every vehicle from Affalterbach honours the brand promise of Driving Performance."

The new AMG sports models display impressive product substance and honour the promise of sports performance with a higher output class, standard all-wheel drive and also sophisticated chassis solutions. The DYNAMIC SELECT variable dynamic control system assigns fundamentally different characteristics to the five transmission modes of INDIVIDUAL, COMFORT, SLIPPERY, SPORT and SPORT+, which the driver is able to select using a rotary control on the centre console. The system networks all the control systems, generating different driving experience parameters. The names speak for themselves: SPORT and SPORT+ turn the GLE 450 AMG into a sporty, dynamic vehicle with pronounced longitudinal and lateral dynamics. COMFORT is the opposite end of the spectrum. Here the emphasis is on the feel-good parameters so typical of classic Mercedes-Benz saloon cars, for relaxed, effortless cruising with the greatest possible energy efficiency. SLIPPERY optimises the handling on surfaces with low friction coefficients such as snow or ice. In addition, INDIVIDUAL mode enables the driver to programme and store personal preferences in the individual control strategies, regardless of the engine variant.

In the GLE 450 AMG, DYNAMIC SELECT not only modulates the "hard skills" such as the chassis and suspension, steering or powertrain. It is also possible to experience the selected mode more intensively on an emotional level because various "soft skills" such as the engine sound, instruments or dynamic control of the driving lights also vary. To this end, the nature of the various displays on the COMAND screen and in the cockpit changes according to the selected transmission mode. At the same time, the active light function of the all-LED headlamps responds more spontaneously and the engine produces the whole range of sounds from sporty and dominant to poised and reticent:

- If the driver selects COMFORT mode, the displays take on lesser importance and, like the engine, the dial instruments such as the rev counter show a relaxed response to the driver's commands. In combination with the comfort-oriented control of the powertrain and suspension, the result is a feel-good ambience at the level of a saloon. The engine sound is reduced to a pleasant timbre, and the feedback from the road surface and surroundings is considerably quieter in the interior.

- Things are very different when SPORT+ mode is selected. The character changes immediately, the gear changes performed by the 9G-TRONIC are acoustically accentuated, especially when downshifting with the double-declutch function, and the cockpit instruments respond faster and more sharply". The large central display visualises the longitudinal and lateral acceleration plus the steering angle with a photo-realistic motorsports graphic. The engine sound is powerful and acoustically underscores the sports mode. This setting removes any doubt: the GLE Coup is a lively sports model of the highest order, and treats its occupants to a compelling world of experience.

A perfect combination: 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive and 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission

In the new GLE Coup, the developers were able to show the possibilities of the new 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission in an all-wheel drive coup with a longitudinal drive configuration. Depending on the mode selected for the DYNAMIC SELECT variable dynamic handling control system, the 9G-TRONIC impresses with great agility and responsiveness or poised serenity. The potential of the new transmission is exploited to the full. It offers an impressively high shift speed and perfect transitions for energetic sprinting as well as with gentle, barely perceptible gear changes for enjoyable cruising.

4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive always goes hand in hand with safe, harmonious and sporty handling. The GLE 350 d and GLE 400 models feature even torque distribution of 50:50 between the front and rear axles. In the particularly sporty GLE 450 AMG Coup, this configuration is modified in preference of even greater agility and more pronounced dynamics around the cars vertical axis, increasing the thirst for cornering. The drive is split in a ratio of 40:60 here. The DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes SPORT and SPORT+ deliver superior longitudinal agility and lateral dynamics specifically as a result of the perfect interplay between the modified driving dynamics control systems ASR, ESP with Curve Dynamic Assist, the electronic traction system 4ETS and the brake control system ADAPTIVE BRAKE.

Stability pact: AIRMATIC with ADS Plus, Sports Direct-Steer and ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM

In addition to the ground-breaking powertrain configuration, the newly designed AIRMATIC air suspension available for the first time with the continuously variable damping system ADS Plus guarantees extremely stable driving. The damping system changes its area of emphasis depending on the preselected DYNAMIC SELECT mode. SPORT+ focuses on the greatest possible lateral dynamics with the best possible ride comfort. Conversely, COMFORT mode enables maximum ride comfort with the best possible dynamics.

The current operating conditions are detected via a steering angle sensor, four turning angle sensors and the driving speed from the ESP signal and the brake pedal switch. The control unit uses these signals for infinitely variable adjustment of the current damping force required for each individual wheel.

The ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM with active roll stabilisation is also part of the special sports systems that are activated when the driver selects SPORT or SPORT+. At the same time, the active anti-roll bars on the front and rear axles raise the comfort to saloon level and compensate for even heavy, one-sided excitation for example when driving over potholes. In combination with the newly configured, degressive Sports Direct-Steer system, whose steering ratio is very direct at 17.4:1, and the compact sports steering wheel, the handling is outstanding in all operating conditions whether manoeuvring in the city, at high speeds on the motorway, or with a swift style of driving on winding mountain passes.

The GLE 350 d 4MATIC and GLE 400 4MATIC models offer the AGILITY CONTROL steel suspension as standard with a amplitude-selective damping system. AIRMATIC air suspension is also optionally available with ADS Plus here.

Wide range of output from 190 kW (258 hp) to 270 kW (367 hp)

Alongside the appealing design, the exceptional suspension and drive technology, and also the assistance systems familiar from the C, E and S-Class, the GLE Coup is also equipped with numerous standard or optional equipment details and packages that further enrich the GLE Coup experience.

An overview of the model range:

The GLE 350 d 4MATIC diesel model develops 190 kW (258 hp) and offers maximum torque of 620 Nm from 1600 rpm. The GLE 400 4MATIC petrol model is fitted with the new direct-injection V6 biturbo engine rated at 245 kW (333 hp) and 480 Nm from 1400 rpm. The impressive presence of both models is underlined by 50.8 cm (20-inch) 10-spoke light-alloy wheels with 275/50 R 20 tyres. For those in search of something more sporty, 53.3 cm (21-inch) or 55.9 cm (22-inch) light-alloy wheels with mixed-size tyres can be ordered, although the latter are only available in conjunction with the AIRMATIC ADS Plus air suspension. The chrome-effect shoulderline trim strips and the simulated underguards at the front and rear lend the coup additional exclusiveness alongside the twin-pipe exhaust system with chrome-plated tailpipe trim. Green-tinted, heat-insulating glass reduces the glare of the sun in the summer, and LED technology features in the headlamps, daytime driving lights, rear lights and third brake light.
The DYNAMIC SELECT dynamic handling control system, the EASY-PACK tailgate with power opening and closing, and the reversing camera with dynamic guide lines in the display are standard features. Additional active handling safety is provided by ESP Curve Dynamic Assist and Crosswind Assist, as well as COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS. The GLE Coup is also equipped as standard with the brake system BAS Plus, optionally available with Cross-Traffic Assist.

The GLE 450 AMG is a particularly sporty choice. The V6 biturbo engine with an output of 270 kW (367 hp) and 520 Nm from 1400 rpm delivers performance akin to a sports car. The DYNAMIC SELECT transmission mode Sport+ is always available in the top-of-the-range model.

The standard equipment here is upgraded with features such as special AMG bodystyling, which includes a specific front and rear apron, a rear spoiler lip painted in the vehicle colour and 53.3 cm (21-inch) AMG 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels with tyres of size 275/45 R 21 (front) and 315/40 R 21 (rear). Optionally available here are 55.9 cm (22-inch) AMG 5-spoke light-alloy wheels also with mixed-size tyres. Excellent traction levels are guaranteed by the impressive tyres of size 285/40 R 22 (front) and 325/35 R 22 (rear). The standard scope of equipment here includes the AIRMATIC package including air suspension and infinitely variable adaptive damping system (ADS Plus) with level control and automatic lowering function at higher speeds, which is optionally available for all models.

Successful design synthesis of Coup and SUV elements

Sensuality and clarity are the two poles that have determined the design idiom of the Mercedes-Benz brand for almost 130 years and have their origin in the nature of the two inventors of the automobile, Carl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler: Benz was more rationally oriented in his behaviour, whereas Daimler was driven more by his passion. The new Mercedes-Benz GLE Coup demonstrates almost ideally how this bridge between intelligence and emotion, between tradition and modernity, blends into an attractive symbiosis.

The GLE Coup not only skilfully embodies the firmly embedded principles of Mercedes-Benz design, but also focuses on the essential features of two entirely different automobile genres. On the one hand, the youngest member of the GLE family bears the decisive, essential stylistic feature of all modern Mercedes-Benz coups: it combines sheer sportiness with a high-level aesthetic and sensual demand for modern luxury. At the same time, however, elements of the classic SUV are recognisable. With muscular wings, large wheel arches, tyres of up to 55.9 cm (22 inches) and also the high belt line and the generous ground clearance, this model takes the perception of a large, four-door coup to the next level.

The extreme proportions with superior aesthetics of the new GLE Coup have emerged from this stylistic gene pool. This is particularly due to the extremely exciting relationship between the low greenhouse and striking body; the silhouette signals dynamism and agility. The upright sports grille with single louvre, framed by three-dimensionally designed all-LED headlamps, is the major feature of the front end with its short, stylish overhang. The forward-sloping bonnet with its typical Mercedes power domes underscores the membership of the GLE Coup in the line-up of particularly sporty Mercedes-Benz models. A discreet reference to the SUV genes of the vehicle is provided by the harmoniously integrated, illuminated running boards, a typical feature of classic SUVs or off-roaders and available as an option.

The coup-like nature is also emphasised by the design of the rear end with its obvious elements of the design line first presented with the S-Class Coup. The styling characteristics of this include the slim band of rear lights with their three-dimensional look, the wide chrome insert fitted above and the registration plate now incorporated into the rear bumper. Another feature that has for generations distinguished the large coup models from Mercedes-Benz is the typical shape of the rear window which is rounded off at the top. A discreet SUV reference is made by the chrome-plated underride guard in the front and rear, here with the integrated twin tailpipe trim elements of the exhaust system.

The attractive sports seats and the compact sports steering wheel, as well as the infotainment elements familiar from the C, E and S-Class initially catch your eye in the interior. The information display, which is not entirely free-standing but partially integrated into the instrument panel, attracts attention and is fitted in an optimum ergonomic position. The centre air vents, with a high-grade silver shadow frame similar to the outer vents, are positioned next to the display. The head unit has the same appearance to underline the homogeneity of the interior. The centre console houses the COMAND Controller with the touchpad fitted above in an optimum ergonomic position. The equipment and appointments in ARTICO man-made leather and the trim elements in light longitudinal-grain aluminium are also impressive. Good infotainment is guaranteed by the Audio 20 CD system with eight loudspeakers and the Remote Online communication module for the use of the Mercedes connect me services in Europe (may vary from country to country).

The interior of the GLE 450 AMG is an impressive sight with AMG sports seats and the black nappa leather AMG sports steering wheel in 3-spoke design as well as the trim elements in light longitudinal-grain aluminium and the sports pedals in brushed stainless steel with rubber studs. AMG carbon-fibre trim and piano lacquer enhance the appearance of the interior as an additional option.

Attractive equipment packages and individual options

Popular equipment details are also combined in attractive packages for the GLE Coup. The Driving Assistance package Plus includes DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist and Stop&Go Pilot, PRE-SAFE Brake with pedestrian detection, BAS PLUS with Cross-Traffic Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist and PRE-SAFE PLUS. The Parking package with 360 camera and Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC guarantees an excellent overview and problem-free manoeuvring into and out of parking spaces. Night-time vision is improved by the LED Intelligent Light System which is a standard feature on all models; adverse weather conditions with impaired view are defused by MAGIC VISION CONTROL the heated, adaptive windscreen wiper system.

The extremely large interior for a coup provides space for up to five people. The rear seat bench in the GLE Coup is even the widest in its class. Drivers who order the optional large panoramic glass roof are rewarded with an even greater feeling of spaciousness for all the passengers. With a maximum of 1650 litres, the coup also offers the largest luggage compartment in its class and just happens to hold the world record for luggage compartments in coups.

For the first time in this segment, Mercedes-Benz is offering a fully electric extendable and retractable trailer coupling, which also includes ESP trailer stabilisation. The towing capacity of the GLE Coup is up to 3500 kg (braked).

As an option, the latest generation of COMAND Online offers perfect infotainment with a 20.3 cm (8-inch) TFT display and intuitive touchpad. The system also includes a DVD player and Traffic Sign Assist with traffic sign recognition including wrong-way warning function. If required, the customer can equip COMAND Online with the 6-disc DVD changer, Rear Seat Entertainment System with remote control, TV receiver or Bang & Olufsen Sound AMG sound system.

Well worth a look: colour and material combinations for the GLE Coup

There are almost limitless possibilities when it comes to customisation of the GLE Coup and the equipment packages again play an important role. For instance, customers can give their GLE Coup an especially sporty look with the AMG Line Exterior, including the AMG front and rear apron and the 53.3 cm (21-inch) AMG light-alloy wheels. Those who like things even more exclusive can combine this feature with the Night package, in which the louvre in the radiator grille and the exterior mirror housings are in high-gloss black, for example. At the same time, the wide selection of solid and metallic paints and the almost limitless possibilities for interior design increase the potential for individual customisation. A total of 11 paint finishes are available, of which seven are metallic colours and two are special paint finishes with special-effect pigments in designo diamond white or designo hyacinth red metallic.

The interior radiates modern luxury and can be given a design ranging from ambitious and sporty to classic and elegant, depending on personal taste. The scope here ranges from single-tone black interior appointments to various combinations in which black is used with ginger beige, crystal grey, saddle brown or porcelain. The interior of the GLE Coup is particularly impressive in two-tone designo exclusive nappa leather in porcelain/black. The AMG Line Interior transfers the sporty look to the interior with features such as AMG sports seats, AMG sports steering wheel, nappa leather appointments and aluminium sports pedals. The designo Exclusive package is packed full of luxury: heated comfort seats with diamond-pattern stitching, instrument panel and door panelling in designo leather and the black DINAMICA roof liner provide for even more exclusive travel.

Depending on personal preference, the trim elements shine in light longitudinal-grain aluminium, brown open-pore ash wood, brown eucalyptus wood, dark-graphite poplar wood or black AMG carbon fibre/piano lacquer.

The new BRABUS ROCKET 900: World premiere at Geneva Motor Show 2015

BRABUS ROCKET 900 that is the new reference for high performance in the luxury class, which celebrates its world premiere at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. BRABUS builds this super car based on the new Mercedes-Benz S 65 AMG.

At the heart of the luxury sedan is the BRABUS ROCKET 900 6.3 V12 Biturbo increased-displacement engine with a peak power output of 662 kW / 900 hp (887 bhp) and a peak torque of 1,500 Nm (1,106 lb-ft).

The power unit in the bow shoots the four-door car from rest to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.7 seconds. Top speed is in excess of 350 km/h (217 mph).

Visually the BRABUS super car impresses with a carbon-fiber aerodynamic-enhancement kit, BRABUS "PLATINUM EDITION" 21- or 22-inch wheels and an exquisite two-tone BRABUS fine leather interior.

The BRABUS "iBusiness" infotainment system for the BRABUS ROCKET 900 is based on state-of-the-art components from Apple such as the iPad mini, the Mac mini, iPod touch and Apple TV, which can be controlled with a custom-developed BRABUS Remote app.

The 12-cylinder engine of the S 65 is revised in every detail in the BRABUS engine shop, which is equipped with a state-of-the-art machine park. The installation of a custom BRABUS billet crankshaft with longer stroke in concert with a larger cylinder bore, matching pistons and precision-balanced custom billet connecting rods increases the displacement from 5.5 to 6.3 liters (336 to 384 cubic inches).

Modifications to the engine peripherals also play a large role in the enormous power output. The two production turbos are replaced with turbochargers that have a larger compressor unit and a larger turbine as well as modified exhaust manifolds. Down pipes with a diameter of 80 millimeters (3.1 inches) are also included in the conversion, as is a stainless-steel BRABUS high-performance exhaust system with free-flow metal catalysts and actively controlled butterfly valve.

Just as crucial is a perfect air supply of the engine. To this end, the BRABUS engine specialists developed the BRABUS 900 intake module, which draws its air through an air duct in the hood directly from the radiator grille. The new intake manifold includes a special air filter housing with larger cross-section and special filters as well as Gold Heat Reflection sheathing for lowering the temperature.

Precisely programmed mapping for injection and ignition coordinate the perfect interaction of the high-performance components. The result is not only maximum power, but also compliance with the strict limits set by the current EURO VI emissions standards. Technology partner MOTUL supplies the high-tech lubricants for the entire powertrain.

The extensive work performed on the engine results in the BRABUS ROCKET 900 6.3 V12 Biturbo engine delivering unrivalled performance figures: the peak power of 662 kW / 900 hp (887 bhp) is produced at a low 5,500 rpm. Even more massive is the peak torque of 1,500 Nm (1,106 lb-ft) at 4,200 rpm. In the car this figure is limited electronically to 1,200 Nm (884 lb-ft).

The power is channeled to the rear wheels by a seven-speed automatic transmission adapted to the tremendous power output and a BRABUS high-performance limited-slip differential with a locking rate of 40 percent. The transmission can also be shifted manually with the BRABUS RACE aluminum paddle shifters on the steering wheel.

The performance of the BRABUS 900 ROCKET on the road is on the level of a full-blooded top-class sports car. From rest the luxury sedan sprints to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.7 seconds. The sprint to 200 km/h (124 mph) takes a measly 9.1 seconds. Top speed is in excess of 350 km/h (217 mph).

This unique driving experience is accompanied by a subtle or thrilling exhaust note as desired. The BRABUS sports exhaust system with actively controlled butterfly valve enables the owner to actively manage the sound at the push of a button. The button on the steering wheel lets the driver choose between driving the luxury sedan in a subtle and quiet Coming Home mode and enjoying a markedly powerful twelve-cylinder sound.

It goes without saying that favorable aerodynamics are crucial at the extremely high speeds so effortlessly attained by the BRABUS ROCKET 900. To minimize aerodynamic lift on the front and rear axle and bring them into perfect balance, the BRABUS designers developed a sporty-elegantly styled bodywork conversion kit. Like in Formula 1 racing, the components are manufactured from carbon fiber and give the luxury sedan a dynamic visual upgrade while optimizing aerodynamic efficiency.

The front bumper of the S 65 is upgraded not only visually with the BRABUS front spoiler lip and the front bumper attachments with a markedly sporty clear-coated carbon-fiber finish. The shape optimized in the wind tunnel also reduces lift on the front axle. This measure contributes to further improved handling stability at high speeds.

The front fenders are upgraded visually with a clear-coated carbon-fiber BRABUS design element. The integrated BRABUS logo is optionally available with lighting, which is activated with the keyless-entry remote or by pulling on a door handle. The BRABUS clear-coated carbon-fiber mirror covers represent a further sporty upgrade of the sides.

The BRABUS aerodynamic-enhancement concept is rounded out with the BRABUS rear spoiler lip and the rear bumper with integrated clear-coated carbon-fiber diffusor and tailor-made cutouts for the BRABUS sports exhausts system with two dual designer tailpipes.

Tailor-made BRABUS Monoblock alloys with diameters of 21 and even 22 inches also play an essential role in the thrilling looks and the even more dynamic and safer handling.

Forged BRABUS "PLATINUM EDITION" wheels of sizes 9Jx21 on the front axle and 10.5Jx21 at the rear are available as a 21-inch tire/wheel combination. Customers can choose from three different designs: mirror-polished Monoblock VI wheels with six double spokes, the Monoblock F cross-spoke styling and the new Monoblock R wheel with dimensionally offset pairs of spokes. High-performance tires from Continental, Pirelli and YOKOHAMA of sizes 255/35 ZR 21 at the front and 295/30 ZR 21 on the rear axle were selected as the perfect rubber.

There is also a 22-inch BRABUS tire/wheel combination. In concert with size 255/30 ZR 22 tires on the front axle and 295/25 ZR 22 tires at the rear, the BRABUS Monoblock G "Platinum Edition" forged wheels of sizes 9Jx22 and 10Jx22 make full use of the available space in the wheel wells.

To be able to enhance the high level of driving dynamics of the high-performance luxury sedan further still, the BRABUS AIRMATIC SPORT unit was developed, a special control module for the air suspension of the luxury sedan. It lowers the ride height of the BRABUS ROCKET 900 by about 15 millimeters (.6 inches) without compromising the outstanding ride quality.

BRABUS is one of the pioneers in the development of innovative, functional and stylishly integrated multimedia systems for cars. The classy ambiance of a BRABUS fine leather interior with perfect finish down to the last detail also allows the stylish integration of a state-of-the-art multimedia system.

The BRABUS ROCKET 900 is also available with the innovative BRABUS iBusiness multimedia system. It uses the latest generation of Apple computer technology for entertainment and global communication via phone and internet.

The BRABUS iBusiness multimedia system integrates an iPad mini tablet computer perfectly into the rear compartment. To this end, a special center console was developed, which is positioned between the two individual seats in the rear. It features a docking station and holds the tablet securely in place when not in use. It also recharges the battery of the computer.

The iPad mini is not only used for communicating with the outside world. The tablet computer can also be used to control all functions of the BRABUS iBusiness system and the COMAND on-board information system. In addition, the mobile computer is connected via InCar hotspot to the Mac Mini, which serves as the host computer.

The ultra-small and yet especially powerful computer is housed securely in a power-retractable drawer tailored to the design of the Mac mini in the trunk of the luxury liner. The BRABUS programmers developed an innovative BRABUS Remote app for the secure communication between the various components of the multimedia equipment.

A 15.6-inch TFT display with an aspect ratio of 16:9 serves as the central monitor for the iPad mini and the other devices of the multimedia system. The power-retractable screen is integrated elegantly into the chic Alcantara headliner. The standard screens in the back of the front head restraints can also be used for watching TV via DVBT or other programming sources in addition. The BRABUS ROCKET 900 is connected to the internet via 4G mobile telecommunications technology.

The music of course comes from an Apple iPod touch of the latest generation, whose 64GB memory can store more than 14,000 songs. The sound is reproduced via the sound system of the S-Class.

The entire system is stylishly integrated into the BRABUS fine leather interior. It is finished to perfection down to the last detail and sports a tasteful combination of light-colored vellum and black. The passengers are welcomed to the interior by stainless-steel scuff plates with backlit BRABUS logo, whose color alternates between red and white.

The BRABUS instrument cluster with 400-km/h (250-mph) scale is also part of the conversion, as are markedly sporty highlights such as aluminum door-lock pins and pedals.

The BRABUS ROCKET 900 can be ordered as a complete car starting at EUR 347,719. Of course the conversion can also be retrofitted to any existing Mercedes S 65.
