Comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment: New S-Class awarded Environmental Certificate

With three development priorities focusing on "Intelligent Drive", "Efficient Technology" and "Essence of Luxury", the new S-Class is broadening technical horizons at many levels. The S-Class sets new standards in terms of efficiency too. Its high environmental compatibility has now been confirmed by the neutral inspectors from the T�V S�d technical inspection authority, who have awarded the Mercedes-Benz Saloon the Environmental Certificate in accordance with ISO standard TR 14062. The award is based on a comprehensive life-cycle assessment of the S-Class, documenting every detail of relevance for the environment.

"The new S-Class achieves consumption and emissions values that were little more than a dream just a few years ago, even for a mid-size car," explains Professor Dr Herbert Kohler, Chief Environmental Officer at Daimler AG. "In comparison with the predecessor series, consumption has been reduced by up to 20 percent, and all models lead their respective classes in terms of efficiency. The CO2 emissions of the S 400 HYBRID have been cut from 186 g CO2/km to 147 g CO2/km compared with the previous model."

Mercedes-Benz analyses the environmental compatibility of its models across their entire life cycle � from production through long years of service to end-of-life recycling. This analysis goes far beyond the legal requirements. The Environmental Certificate and supplementary information are made available to the public as part of the "Life Cycle" documentation series, which can be accessed at http://www.mercedes-benz.com . In 2005, the S-Class became the first-ever vehicle to be awarded the Environmental Certificate from T�V S�d. This tradition is being successfully continued with the new 2013 S-Class.

All models comply with the EURO 6 emissions standard. The S 400 HYBRID and the S 350 BlueTEC additionally meet the strict criteria of efficiency class A, with the S 300 BlueTEC HYBRID even qualifying for class A+.

Wide range of hybrids, greater use of recycled materials

The fuel efficiency benefits of the new S-Class are ensured by an intelligent package of measures. These include optimisation of the drive system, energy management, aerodynamics, tyres, weight reductions through lightweight construction techniques and driver information to encourage an energy-saving driving style.

Hybrids represent a further milestone on the road to zero-emission mobility. With the new S-Class, Mercedes-Benz is expanding its line-up in this model series to three models: S 400 HYBRID, S 300 BlueTEC HYBRID and S 500 PLUG-IN HYBRID. Common to all second-generation hybrid drives is their seamless integration into the powertrain. The engine can be completely decoupled from the electric motor. Further features are the second-generation recuperative braking system and the anticipatory Intelligent HYBRID energy management system.

Even though recycling is still a long way off for new S-Class models, the development process took account of all the requirements for environmentally compatible end-of-life recycling. In an effort already today to build up and develop the markets for recycled materials, increased use was made of such materials in the production of the new S-Class. In total, the new S-Class includes 51 components weighing a total of 49.7 kilograms that can be produced with the partial use of high-quality recycled plastics. The weight of secondary raw material components could thus be increased by 134 percent compared with the predecessor series.

There is also an increased emphasis on closed automobile materials cycles: the wheel arch linings, for example, are made from such materials as reprocessed bumper coverings. Some 87 S-Class components with a total weight of 46.1 kilograms are produced using natural materials. For instance, the coverings for the driver and front-passenger seat backrests are made of coconut fibre and wool.

Living Electric: Daimler is the market leader in electric cars

In 2013 Daimler AG is once again asserting its market leadership in electric cars in Germany. In the first half of 2013 the electrically powered models from Mercedes-Benz and smart achieved a market share of 42 percent. The absolute leader is the electric smart, which heads the registration list for electric cars with 983 units and a market share of 40 percent. Compared to the previous year, the company has therefore increased its unit sales of electrically powered models in Germany by around 80 percent.

smart � trailblazer in electric mobility

Now an electrically powered automotive icon, the smart fortwo electric drive has been making its mark on roads around the world with its locally emission-free drive system since as far back as 2007. With a lively 35-55 kW, a top speed of 125 km/h and a range of 145 km, it is the perfect companion for practically any mobility scenario in the city. According to the recent findings of one motoring magazine, it is also the best performer among electric vehicles in terms of operating costs. Customer feedback speaks for itself: 93 percent of all E-smart drivers unreservedly recommend the vehicle. Since 2012 the electrically powered two-seater has been out and about on Germany's roads with absolutely zero emissions: coinciding with the start of series production of the third model generation, Daimler AG took a wind turbine into operation. Its nominal output of 2.3 megawatts per year is sufficient to generate sustainable electric power for all the smart fortwo electric drive cars sold in Germany.

The variant of the electric drive modified by the vehicle tuner BRABUS brings even more dynamism into the electric smart world. Thanks to a higher output of 60 kW, maximum torque of 135 Nm and a maximum speed of 130 km/h, the two-seater zips along even more enthusiastically. Acceleration from zero to 60 km/h takes just 4.4 seconds, and the speedometer shows 100 km/h after 10.2 seconds.

Electric mobility on two wheels completes the electric portfolio of the smart brand. A 250-watt hub motor by Bionx at the rear wheel assists the rider of the smart ebike up to a speed of 25 km/h. The energy for a range of up to 100 kilometres is stored by a 423 Wh lithium-ion battery. As a recipient of the coveted "Red Dot Design Award", the smart ebike is available for as little as � 2,849. While the rider of the ebike has to operate the pedals, the next two-wheeled product from smart requires no muscle power at all: the smart scooter.

Locally emission-free with the Mercedes star

This year the latest addition to the Mercedes E-model range has celebrated its world premiere in the USA. Due to be launched from 2014, the B-Class Electric Drive impresses with locally emission-free driving pleasure and no compromises, plus the usual high Mercedes standard of safety and comfort for up to five occupants. The B-Class Electric Drive generates a peak output of over 100 kW and, with acceleration from zero to 100 km/h in under ten seconds, demonstrates that electrically powered vehicles are by no means "slouches", but on the contrary capable of dynamic performance. Its top speed is 160 km/h, the operating range around 200 kilometres.

The sheer fascination of E-mobility is embodied by the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coup� Electric Drive. Presented at the 2012 Paris Motor Show as a limited series production version, the world's most powerful electric super-sports car can now be ordered by customers and continues to impress, not least with its outstanding performance figures: an output of 552 kW, maximum torque of 1,000 Nm which is available right from the start as in all electric models, and acceleration from zero to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds. It has a range of around 250 kilometres. This super sports car achieved a lap time of 7:56.234 minutes on the North Loop of the N�rburgring, setting a record in its class. The SLS AMG Coup� Electric Drive is available for � 416,500.

As a pioneer in the field of fuel cell technology, Daimler AG produced the first of around 200 examples of the B-Class F-CELL (100 kW/136 hp, range 380 kilometres, top speed 170 km/h) in Rastatt back in 2009. During the Mercedes-Benz F-CELL World Drive 2011, the technology impressively demonstrated its high level of maturity over more than 30,000 kilometres around the globe. Since the presentation of the first prototype in 1994, the company remains committed to this high-potential technology on the road to sustainable mobility. The partnership with Ford and Nissan further underscores the company's determination to bring the technology to market. From 2017 the first competitive series production models with fuel cell power are to be available on a broad basis.

Hybrid drive for the E- and S-Class

Suitably configured hybrid models round off the range of electric drive systems from Mercedes-Benz. In the case of the E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID, which combines a four-cylinder diesel engine (150 kW/204 hp) with an electric motor (20 kW/27 hp), fuel consumption is just 4.1 l/100 km, corresponding to CO2 emissions of 107 g/km. These figures secure a top position in this segment for the E-hybrid. Moreover, the recent findings of one motoring magazine confirm that it has the most favourable operating costs. In combination with the optional 80-litre fuel tank, and if the advantages of its hybrid drive are consistently exploited, the E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID can achieve an operating range of 1,900 kilometres, so completely redefining the concept of a long-distance vehicle. In markets where the diesel engine is of lesser importance, the E-Class is available with petrol hybrid drive.

The Mercedes-Benz hybrid system is modular and scalable in design, and can be applied to numerous model series. In the coming years, in line with the timing of new model introductions, there will be numerous new hybrid models. The modular hybrid system also shows its strengths in conjunction with the different drive systems. In-line four-cylinder engines (petrol and diesel) can be hybridised just as well as e.g. a V6 petrol engine.

The new S-Class demonstrates how luxury and sustainability can be combined at a previously unprecedented level. Apart from fuel-optimised petrol and diesel models, hybrid and plug-in hybrid models are available. Joining the S400 Hybrid, the S 300 BlueTEC HYBRID will be launched next year as the first car in the luxury segment to offer a fuel consumption level of under five litres per 100 kilometres. Also in the coming year, the S 500 PLUG-IN HYBRID will set new standards in the luxury class with a fuel consumption of less than four litres per 100 km. While the S 400 HYBRID meets the criteria for efficiency class A, the S 300 BlueTEC HYBRID is the only luxury saloon to be classified as A+.

Electric drive also for commercial vehicles

In addition to passenger cars, Mercedes-Benz also offers a range of electrically powered commercial vehicles. Series production of the Vito E-CELL, for example, commenced as early as 2010. The electrically powered Vito is now available in 15 European countries. The van is powered by a 60 kW electric motor (maximum torque 280 Nm). The lithium-ion batteries with a capacity of 36 Kwh are located beneath the load compartment floor so that load capacity is not restricted and a maximum payload of 850 kilograms is possible. A top speed that is limited to 89 km/h allows a range of 130 kilometres. The Fuso Canter E-CELL is also part of Daimler's electric vehicle portfolio. It is powered by a 70 kW electric motor and has a range of 120 kilometres. The award-winning, emission-free Mercedes-Benz Citaro FuelCELL Hybrid city bus, which has been servicing urban public transport networks in European cities since 2011, also demonstrates that fuel cell technology is suitable for use in large vehicles. Freightliner in the USA offers the Custom Chassis MT E-CELL All Electric.

Premiere of the new 9G-TRONIC: New nine-speed automatic transmission debuts in the Mercedes-Benz E 350 BlueTEC

The first nine-speed automatic transmission with torque converter, the 9G-TRONIC for premium vehicles, is celebrating its world premiere: equipped with the innovative power transmission, the E 350 BlueTEC is set to become one of the most fuel-efficient six-cylinder diesel models in its class. Thanks to the high level of efficiency of the patented transmission design, NEDC fuel consumption in the E-Class is reduced to 5.3 litres of diesel per 100 km. As is typical of the brand, the transmission features outstanding comfort and barely perceptible gear changes. The E 350 BlueTEC featuring the 9G-TRONIC as standard is available to order with immediate effect. Despite the extended scope of functions, the pricing for both the Saloon and Estate models remains unchanged.

In the E 350 BlueTEC, which is available as Saloon and Estate models and comes fitted with the new 9G-TRONIC as standard, the 185 kW (252 hp) V6 diesel engine has an average NEDC fuel consumption of 5.3 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres (Estate: 5.5 l/100 km), corresponding to CO2 emissions of 138 g/km (Estate: 144 g/km). As a result, the new models with 9G-TRONIC undercut their predecessors in terms of both consumption and CO2 emissions. The higher number of gears and the broader gear ratio spread help to increase drive comfort and enable a significant enhancement to be achieved in terms of converting engine power into traction.

Perfect interaction: E 350 BlueTEC with V6 diesel engine and 9G-TRONIC

On the one hand, the overall reduction in engine speed improves NVH comfort and therefore the pleasant sense of well-being on board the E-Class, and on the other also cuts down external noise by up to 4 dB(A), thus reducing the strain on the environment.

The reduced fuel consumption of the E 350 BlueTEC with 9G-TRONIC has primarily been achieved as a result of the high level of efficiency of the transmission. As part of this, the broad ratio spread of 9.15 for gears one to nine enables a clearly perceptible reduction in engine speed and is a decisive factor behind the high level of energy efficiency and ride comfort. Shortened shift and reaction times ensure optimum spontaneity combined with outstanding ease of shifting. In manual mode and the S program in particular, the 9G-TRONIC responds significantly more spontaneously and enhances driving pleasure.

The particular ease of shifting of the new 9G-TRONIC � a focal point during development and a hallmark feature of a Mercedes-Benz automatic transmission - comes courtesy of a comprehensive package of measures. These include the novel direct control system which enables short, barely perceptible gear changes. The combination of double torsional damper and centrifugal pendulum technology in the torque converter ensures outstanding drive comfort. Together with the extended gear ratio spread, higher speeds can now be driven at lower engine speeds for even greater comfort. In reality this translates for example into being able to drive at 120 km/h in 9th gear with an engine speed of around only 1350 rpm.

Advanced technology for superior power transmission

In the case of the 9-speed automatic transmission, the development engineers also focused on the area of "compact lightweight construction". Despite two additional gears and a maximum transferable torque of up to 1000 Newton metres, the new automatic transmission requires as little installation space as its predecessor and, in addition, is lighter. The two-piece housing design has been retained: the torque converter housing is made of lightweight aluminium, while the transmission housing with weight-optimised plastic oil pan is made of an even lighter magnesium alloy.

Another goal was to implement the nine gears with a minimal number of planetary gear sets and shift elements. Intensive, computer-based system analysis and mock-up made it possible to realise this goal with just four simple planetary gear sets and six shift elements. Three speed sensors monitor operation and provide the transmission control system with corresponding data for effective shifting. Here it is possible for several gears to be jumped when accelerating or decelerating, should the driving conditions call for it.

To ensure the reliable and at the same time highly efficient supply of the durable and shear-resistant 2nd-generation synthetic fuel economy engine oil, the new automatic transmission is fitted with two pumps. The considerably smaller mechanical main pump, featuring an off-axis design, is located next to the main shaft and is chain-driven and fed by a separate electric auxiliary pump. This design enables the flow of lubrication and coolant to be controlled actively on demand and also means that the 9G-TRONIC can benefit from a start/stop system. Thanks to the world's first direct control system in a planetary automatic transmission with nine gears, it has also been possible to significantly increase hydraulic efficiency within the transmission.

Around 22 million automatic transmissions from Mercedes-Benz since 1961

Mercedes-Benz has been developing and producing high-quality automatic transmissions featuring outstanding ease of shifting, optimum energy efficiency and dependable durability for more than 50 years. To date, a total of around 22 million automatic passenger car transmissions have left the manufacturing plant at Stuttgart-Hedelfingen, close to the Group's headquarters in Stuttgart-Untert�rkheim.

The 9G-TRONIC is suitable for rear-wheel and all-wheel drives as well as hybrid and plug-in hybrid drive systems and will be used in almost all model series and engines in the coming years.

The E 350 BlueTEC fitted with the 9G-TRONIC as standard is available to order as Saloon or Estate models with immediate effect. As such the benefits of the new automatic transmission are being passed on to customers at no extra cost. The market launch will take place in September 2013.
